ABOUT US
Our Family Farm
Our farm in Powhatan, VA has been in the family since the 1960's. The first generation was Sylvanus Moyer who bought the farm for his four sons and has since gone to be with the Lord. David Moyer (Grandpa) was the second generation to work at clearing fields, making ponds, and creating good drainage systems so he could grow crops. His son, Vernon Moyer, went to Virginia Tech to study crop farming, expanding the farm's grain operation to what it is today, and has worked to clear and establish most of our cattle pastures. His son, Nathaniel Moyer, and son-in-law, Ben Miller, are the newest generation working on the farm with goals of continuing crop farming, though with an added emphasis on growing our cattle operation. The four of us, along with our wives and families, are committed to working together to be good stewards of the land and animals the Lord has entrusted us with here in Powhatan. We believe that caring for the land, animals, and resources we've been given is both a responsibility and a privilege. One of the ways we work at honoring that is through implementing regenerative agricultural practices. Regenerative ag is a farming approach that focuses on restoring and improving soil health, increasing biodiversity, and enhancing the natural ecosystem by using practices like cover cropping, reduced tillage, crop rotation, composting, and managed grazing. We have started making and applying our own compost extract on our fields and pastures to boost microbial activity in the soil, in turn improving the quality of forage of the pastures and thus the nutrient density of our meat. We want our approach to not only support the well-being of our animals but to also reflect our deep gratitude and respect for the gifts God has provided.
